The Night Chant (A NAVAJO HYMN) In the house made of dawn,
In the house made of twilight, In the house made of dark cloud, In the house made of rain and mist, pollen and grasshoppers, Where dark mist curtains the doorway And the path to the door is a rainbow, Where zigzag lightning stands high on top, Oh, divinity! With your moccasins of dark clouds, come to us, With your leggings and shirt and headdress of dark cloud, come to us, With dark thunder above you, come to us, soaring, With massed clouds at your feet, come to us, soaring, With the far darkness made of dark clouds over your head, come to us, soaring, With the far darkness made of rain and mist over your head, come to us, soaring, With zigzag lightning flung out high over your head, With the rainbow hanging high over your head, come to us, soaring, With the far darkness made of the dark clouds on the ends of your wings, With zigzag lightning, with the rainbow hanging high on the ends of your wings, come to us. An abundance of clouds we desire, swollen with rain, An abundance of growth we desire, An abundance of pollen, an abundance of dew we desire. Happily may fair white corn, to the ends of the earth, come with you. Happily may yellow corn, blue corn, corn of all kinds, plants of all kinds, goods of all kinds, fine stones of all kinds, to the ends of the earth, come with you. The old men will be happy, seeing you coming. The old women will be happy, seeing you coming. The young men and young women will see you, The children will see you, The chiefs will see you, Happily, as they scatter in all directions, they will see you. Happily they will regard you as they go home. May their roads home be on the trail of peace, Happily may they all return, Walking in beauty. Walking with beauty before them, Walking with beauty behind them, With beauty above and about them. It is finished in beauty. It is finished in beauty. |
